World Animal Day - 4 Oct 2014

World Animal Day World Animal Day is an international day of action for animal rights and welfare celebrated annually on October 4, the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. It started in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence, Italy who wished to highlight the plight of endangered species.

ADANA traditionally makes collections outside of Carrefour Estepona and Supersol Bel Air over a four day period covering the 4th October. We obtain a license from the Ayuntamiento and then call upon a pool of volunteers, so that we can draw up a rota covering three days from 10am until 10pm. We give one day over to Michele from Gatos y Amigos for them to collect and raise funds for their organisation.

World Animal Day is an excellent opportunity to raise a lot of money for ADANA. However each year proves increasingly difficult to get volunteers to fill all the slots for both venues. In fact this year we were unable to fill a single time slot at Bel Air.

But still our intrepid volunteers turned out in force at Carrefour and have collected a wonderful €1612.18. Heartfelt thanks go to this years collectors for their support: Ana Rodriguez, Lorenzo, Sonia and Hermione Longman, Salvadora, Tim Pethick with Harley, Sandra, Lisa Marie and Anton, Terttu, Johnnie, Ann Gerrish with Nico, Helen Oldfield, Lianne, Peta.

We are always looking for volunteers for a wide variety of tasks, including collections like the above, cleaning at the kennels, manning stalls at the Xmas fair and Dog show, airport runs, translation work and much more. If you feel that you would like to be added to our World Animal Day database, can volunteer for another activity or would like more information then please email our secretary on This email address is being protected from spambots.
